YOUR NUTRITION WHILE ON THE GO: GAS STATION GO TOS

No matter what approach you may take towards your nutrition, travel often throws us out of our groove.

That feeling of “I can’t do it perfectly so I’ll just start over once we’re back home” keeps us in a forever cycle of all or nothing in our nutrition - feeling like conditions must be “perfect” for us to be successful, and feeling like we’re hopeless when conditions are anything less than ideal.

Something I often urge clients to do is to keep easy-win snacks on hand at all times, but especially during travel - whether that’s a day of work travel, a family road trip, or just a long day of errands where you’re out and about the whole day.

We often write off anything other than a well-established grocery store as not a great option for finding good food, but that’s not always true!

While on the road, gas stations can be a fantastic place to find those “easy win” snacks.

Some options you may find at a gas station:

IN THE DRINK COOLER

  • Pre-made protein shakes (Muscle Milk, Fair Life, Premier Protein, etc.)

  • Zero or low calorie drinks like Powerade Zero or sparking water

  • Greek yogurt single serves or yogurt drinks

IN THE REFRIGERATED SECTION

  • Cheese sticks

  • Hard boiled eggs

  • Chopped veggies + ranch cups

  • Sabra (or other brand) hummus + pretzel cups

  • Pre-made sandwiches

IN THE SNACK SECTION

  • Protein bars (ideally look for one with the highest amount of calories coming from protein. Some good examples are Barebells, One bars, Built bars, Quest bars, No Cow bars, and some Power Crunch bars)

  • Granola bars

  • Packaged snacks like pretzels, almonds, popcorn or baked chips that contain 1-2 portions

  • Dried fruit

  • Jerky

  • Tuna packets + crackers

Note: If tracking your macros, most of these foods also have a barcode to scan which can make tracking infinitely easier!

Enjoy your travels this summer! Know that no conditions need to be perfect for you to still make choices that align with your specific goals, and those choices can be found almost anywhere.
